Momijiba o kyō wa nao min kurenu tomo ogura no yama no na ni wa sawaraji

English Translation
The autumn leaves, yet
today I'll gaze on longer,
though the day grows dark;
Ogura Hill's dusky name
shall not stand in my way.
Meaning
Today I will keep gazing at the autumn leaves; even if the day grows dark, the dim name of Mount Ogura will not stop me.
Commentary
Book Three Autumn Poems 195

Headnote: "When people went to the Ōi River and composed poems"
The poet resolves to keep gazing at the autumn leaves even as the day darkens, for though Mount Ogura's name means dim and dark, that name will not keep him from seeing them. Playing on the name of Mount Ogura, the poem wittily expresses a heart that never tires of the autumn leaves. According to the headnote, it was composed when people went to the Ōi River and wrote poems.
The author, written as Yoshinobu, is Ōnakatomi no Yoshinobu. From the Ōnakatomi family, who served as chief priests of the Ise Shrine, he took part in compiling the Gosenshū and in reading the Man'yōshū as one of the Five Men of the Pear Chamber, and he is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

First line, "momijiba o," takes up "momijiba no" in the preceding poem's first line, referring to the autumn leaves along the Ōi River.
Second line, "kyō wa nao min," means "today I will still gaze," with "n" as a volitional auxiliary. The poem pauses here.
Third line, "kurenu tomo," means "even if the day grows dark," with "tomo" marking a concessive hypothetical condition.
Fourth line, "ogura no yama no," is a pivot word in which "ogura" means both Mount Ogura beside the Ōi River and "dimly dark." The darkness in the name of Mount Ogura is also sung of in 128 and 135 of Book Two, and the conceit on the name is carried on here.
Final line, "na ni wa sawaraji," means "its name will not stand in my way," with "ji" as an auxiliary of negative conjecture.
