cold showers seem to have fallen,
for with yearning cries,
like kudzu leaves turned and scorched,
the deer too are calling out.

Book Four Winter Poems 218
Headnote: "Topic unknown"
Hearing a deer cry, the poet infers that cold showers have fallen, overlaying the coloring of the kudzu leaves with the heart of a deer burning with longing. The showers, the reddening kudzu and the voice of the deer, all things of late autumn and early winter, are gathered into a single scene tinged with the feeling of love.
The fourth line of the main text reads "urakogaru ne ni" and does not match "uchikogaru ne ni" in the kana reading line. Here the main text is followed.
First line, "kannazuki," is the Tenth Month of the lunar calendar, the first month of winter.
Second line, "shigure shinurashi," means "cold showers seem to have fallen," with "nu" a perfective auxiliary and "rashi" an inference based on evidence, here the deer's voice in the final line. The poem pauses here. Together with the final line of the next poem, "shigure furu rashi," it shares the pattern of inferring showers from a sign before the eyes.
Third line, "kuzu no ha no," leads to "ura" (underside) in the fourth line, since kudzu leaves flip in the wind to show their undersides.
Fourth line, "urakogaru ne ni," plays on the undersides of the kudzu leaves coloring as if scorched by the showers and the heart burning with longing, meaning "with such a voice."
Final line, "shika mo naku nari," means "the deer too seem to be crying," with "nari" an auxiliary of inference from sound. "Mo" adds the sense that, besides the sound of the showers, even the deer are calling.
