Hito wa isa okashi ya suran fuyu kureba toshi nomi tsumoru yuki to koso mire

English Translation
As for other men,
who knows what sins they commit?
when the winter comes
I see only snow that piles
like the years upon me.
Meaning
Others may well be committing sins, I cannot say; for me, when winter comes, I see only snow that piles up like the years.
Commentary
Book Four Winter Poems 260

Headnote: "For a folding screen painting, a scene of the Buddha Names service"
For a scene of the Buddha Names service, the poet says he cannot tell whether others have committed sins, but for him what piles up when winter comes is not sin but only years. Against the background of a service for repenting sins, he overlays the piling snow not with sin but with age, expressing his feelings at the year's end. According to the headnote, it was written for a folding screen painting of the Buddha Names service.
The author, written as Kanemori, is Taira no Kanemori. Of a Taira line descended from Emperor Kōkō, he was a poet of the mid-Heian period. He is known for his performance at the palace poetry contest of the fourth year of Tentoku and is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

First line, "hito wa isa," means "as for others, who can say," with "isa" expressing uncertainty.
Second line, "okashi ya suran," means "do they commit sins, I wonder," with "ya" resolved by the attributive "ran." The poem pauses here.
Third line, "fuyu kureba," means "when winter comes."
Fourth line, "toshi nomi tsumoru," means "only the years pile up," with "nomi" expressing limitation. Whereas the Buddha Names poems before it sang of sins vanishing, this one says what piles up is not sin but years.
Final line, "yuki to koso mire," means "I see it as snow," with the emphatic particle "koso" resolved by the perfective "mire."
