Book Five Celebration Poems 281
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "When the same person's seventieth birthday was celebrated, a bamboo staff was made"
The poet says that though this is a staff that has climbed to the very peak of Mount Kurai, from now on it is a staff for crossing the slope of ten thousand ages of long life. Playing on Mount Kurai in Hida and "kurai," court rank, he praises Saneyori, who has already risen to the highest rank, and blesses him to cross the slope of long life still further. According to the headnote, like the preceding poem it was composed when a bamboo staff was made for the seventieth-birthday celebration of Fujiwara no Saneyori.
The author, written as Yoshinobu, is Ōnakatomi no Yoshinobu. From the Ōnakatomi family, who served as chief priests of the Ise Shrine, he took part in compiling the Gosenshū and in reading the Man'yōshū as one of the Five Men of the Pear Chamber, and he is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "kuraiyama," plays on Mount Kurai, a famed place in Hida, and "kurai," court rank.
Second line, "mine made tsukeru," means "with which you climbed to the peak," a figure for reaching the highest rank.
Third line, "tsue naredo," means "though it is a staff," pairing with "tsue nareba" in the third line of the preceding poem.
Fourth line, "ima yorozuyo no," means "now, of ten thousand ages."
Final line, "saka no tame nari," means "it is for the slope," likening the years still to be added to a slope.
