Headnote: "Composed when I was still of low rank, on the occasion of a Day of the Rat outing at the house of the Ono-no-miya Chancellor"
Following the custom of pulling young pines on the Day of the Rat, the poet says he means in years to come to draw his lord's thousand years of life to him. He overlays the pulling of young pines with drawing in the master's thousand-year life. According to the headnote, it was composed when the poet was still of low rank, at a Day of the Rat outing at the house of the Ono-no-miya Chancellor, that is, his father Fujiwara no Saneyori.
The author, called the Sanjō Chancellor, is Fujiwara no Yoritada. A son of the Ono-no-miya Chancellor Fujiwara no Saneyori, he rose to Regent and Chancellor. He was the father of Fujiwara no Kintō.
First line, "yukusue mo," means "in the years to come as well."
Second line, "ne no hi no matsu no," means "of the pine of the Day of the Rat," taking up "ne no hi" in the third line and "matsu" in the fourth line of the preceding poem, so that poems on the Rat Day pine continue.
Third line, "tameshi ni wa," means "as a precedent or model."
Fourth line, "kimi ga chitose o," means "your thousand years."
Final line, "hikan to zo omou," means "I mean to draw," with "n" an auxiliary of will, and "zo" resolved by the attributive "omou." Like "hiku bekarikere" in the preceding poem, it draws long life to the honoree through the custom of pulling pines.
