Book Five Celebration Poems 292
Headnote: "Topic unknown"
The poem says that those who perform the summer-end purification of the Sixth Month are said to lengthen their lives by a thousand years. Linking an annual rite of purification with the wish for long life, it celebrates purifying oneself and extending one's life.
First line, "minazuki no," means "of the Sixth Month" of the lunar calendar.
Second line, "nagoshi no harae," is the purification held on the last day of the Sixth Month, in which people passed through a ring of reeds to cleanse the sins and impurities of half a year.
Third line, "suru hito wa," means "those who perform it."
Fourth line, "chitose no inochi," means "a life of a thousand years."
Final line, "nobu to iu nari," means "will be lengthened, so they say," with "nari" an auxiliary of hearsay. The next poem, 293, also prays after a ritual cleansing, so poems on purifying oneself and praying for long life stand together.
