Book Six Parting Poems 334
Headnote: "Reply"
To Motosuke, who lamented his old age, the poet replies that Motosuke is fine since his road ahead is long, but that it is he, staying in the capital and waiting for his return, whose fate is uncertain. Dismissing his friend's lament about age and blessing him with long life, while turning the talk to the forlornness of the one left behind, it is a considerate reply. According to the headnote, it is a reply to the preceding poem.
The author, written as Minamoto no Mitsunaka Ason with a different character, is Minamoto no Mitsunaka. A son of Minamoto no Tsunemoto of the Seiwa Genji, he served as Commander of the Pacification Headquarters and other posts, and, based at Tada in Settsu, became the founder of the Tada Genji.
First line, "kimi wa yoshi," means "you are fine," and the poem pauses here.
Second line, "yukusue tōshi," means "your road ahead is long," and the poem pauses here. Taking up the "distant" of "this distant parting in old age" in the preceding poem, it turns the distance of the road into the length of the years ahead.
Third line, "tomaru mi no," means "of me who stays in the capital."
Fourth line, "matsu hodo ikaga," means "how, while I wait for your return."
Final line, "aran to su ran," means "will it be," with "ran" a conjectural auxiliary. Exchanging the places of the one who departs and the one who stays, it answers the question of the preceding poem.
