crossing as the tide came in
who first gave this place
its name, the Bridge of Hamana,
for the beach the sea had drowned?
Meaning
Was it travelers crossing back and forth as the tide came in who first named this the Bridge of Hamana, since the beach was gone?
Commentary
Book Six Parting Poems 342

Headnote: "For a sliding screen at the house of Lord Kōtoku"
The poet playfully guesses at the origin of the place name, wondering whether travelers crossing the bridge when the tide was high and the beach had disappeared named it Hamana, "no beach." He adds the wit of a place name to the travel scene painted on the screen. According to the headnote, it was written for a sliding screen painting at the house of Lord Kōtoku, that is, Fujiwara no Tamemitsu.
The author, written as Kanemori, is Taira no Kanemori. Of a Taira line descended from Emperor Kōkō, he was a poet of the mid-Heian period. He is known for his performance at the palace poetry contest of the fourth year of Tentoku and is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

First line, "shio miteru," means "as the tide is full," with "ru" an auxiliary of continuing state.
Second line, "hodo ni yukikau," means "crossing back and forth at that time."
Third line, "tabibito ya," means "was it travelers," with "ya" a questioning particle.
Fourth line, "hamana no hashi to," plays on the Bridge of Hamana, a famed place in Tōtōmi, and "hama na," no beach. Following 317 and 318 of this book, a bridge is sung of.
Final line, "nazuke someken," means "first named it, I wonder," with "ken" an auxiliary of past conjecture resolving "ya" in its attributive form. The next poem, 343, is also a poem of wit on a place "name," so poems on names stand together.
