Book Seven Names of Things 370
Headnote: "Higurashi (evening cicada)"
The poet says that since the morning they parted, when the beloved promised to come soon, she has spent each day thinking of that person and only weeps aloud like the evening cicada. Overlaying the grief of waiting for one who does not come with the cicada's voice, the poem works the name "higurashi" given in the headnote into "omoikurashi" in the fourth line. The headnote names the thing hidden in the poem.
Tadamine, that is, Mibu no Tadamine, was one of the compilers of the Kokinshū and the father of Mibu no Tadami, and he is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
The monk Sosei's love poem in the Kokinshū, "Ima komu to iishi bakari ni nagatsuki no ariake no tsuki o machiidetsuru kana," is also a poem of waiting for one who promised to come, and it begins with the same first line.
First line, "ima komu to," means "that I will come soon," with "mu" an auxiliary of intention.
Second line, "iite wakareshi," means "saying so, we parted," with "shi" the attributive of the past auxiliary "ki."
Third line, "ashita yori," means "since that morning."
Fourth line, "omoikurashi no," plays on "omoikurashi," spending the day in longing, and "higurashi," the evening cicada. The next poem, 371, and the one after, 372, are on the same topic, so three poems on the evening cicada stand together.
Final line, "ne o nomi zo naku," means "I only weep aloud," with "zo" resolved by the attributive "naku."
