Takagai no mada mo konaku ni tsunagiinu no hanarete ikamu na kuru matsu hodo

English Translation
The falconer still
has not come, and yet the dog
that we keep tied up
seems about to break and go,
while it waits for him to come.
Meaning
The falconer has not yet come, and the dog we tied up seems about to break loose and leave while it waits for him to arrive.
Commentary
Book Seven Names of Things 419

Headnote: "Munaguruma (empty cart)"
The poem is understood to say that the falconer has not yet come, and the tethered dog seems about to break loose and leave while waiting for him. Singing of the restlessness before a hawking expedition, it hides the name "munaguruma" given in the headnote in the run of sounds "mu na kuru ma" from the fourth to the final line. The headnote names the thing hidden in the poem.
The author, written as Sukemi, is Fujiwara no Sukemi. A son of Fujiwara no Hirotsune, he was a mid-Heian poet known as Tōroku. He excelled at poems hiding the names of things, and his personal collection is the Tōrokushū.
The fourth line of the main text reads "ikamu," which does not match "yukamu" in the line giving the reading. The main text is followed here.

First line, "takagai no," means "the falconer who keeps hawks and serves in the hunt." It echoes the sparrow hawk of 410 in this book through the hawk.
Second line, "mada mo konaku ni," means "though he has not yet come," with "naku ni" expressing concession.
Third line, "tsunagiinu no," means "the tethered dog," and has six syllables, one more than the norm.
Fourth line, "hanarete ikamu na," means "seems about to break loose and go," with "na" understood as exclamatory. Its final "mu na" with "kuruma" at the start of the final line hides the name "munaguruma."
Final line, "kuru matsu hodo," means "while waiting for him to come," attaching by inversion to the fourth line.
