Omou koto ari to wa nashi ni hisakata no tsukiyo to nareba nerarezarikeri

English Translation
Though there is nothing
that I have upon my mind,
when it is a night
of the far-shining moon,
I find I cannot sleep.
Meaning
Though there is nothing in particular troubling me, when the moon shines bright at night, I find I cannot sleep.
Commentary
Book Eight Miscellaneous Poems I 433

Headnote: "For a screen at the house of Lord Seishin"
The poet says that although nothing in particular troubles him, he cannot fall asleep on a bright moonlit night. He expresses the beauty of a moonlit night that captures the heart for no reason through his own sleeplessness. The headnote shows it was written for a painted screen in the house of Lord Seishin, that is, Fujiwara no Saneyori. Like the preceding poem, 432, it turns on being moved by the moon without any cause for brooding, and the two poems form a pair.
The author, written as Tsurayuki, is Ki no Tsurayuki. The leading compiler of the Kokinshū, he wrote its kana preface and the Tosa Diary. He is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

First line, "omou koto," means "anything troubling me," taking up "mono omou" in the second line of the preceding poem.
Second line, "ari to wa nashi ni," means "though it is not that there is," restating almost exactly the preceding poem's "mono omou to shimo nakeredomo."
Third line, "hisakata no," is a pillow word introducing "tsuki," the moon.
Fourth line, "tsukiyo to nareba," means "when it is a moonlit night," with "ba" after the perfective form expressing a constant condition.
Final line, "nerarezarikeri," means "I find I cannot sleep," with "rare" an auxiliary of possibility and "keri" expressing a sigh of realization. Where the preceding poem looked back on how often he had gazed at the moon, this one sings of a sleepless night.
