Commentary
Book Eight Miscellaneous Poems I 453

Headnote: "When, in the Tenryaku reign, the emperor had famous places painted on a screen and had people present poems, on Takasago"
The poet sings that the treetops of the pines on the summit at Takasago bend low, and even the wind blows with a voice like that of waves. The headnote shows it was written for a screen depicting famous places in Emperor Murakami's reign, to accompany a painting of Takasago. Likening the wind in the pines of Takasago, a famous seaside place, to the voice of breaking waves, he makes sound ring within the painting. Taking up the pine wind of the two preceding poems, poems on pines continue from here.
The author, Tadami, was a son of the Kokinshū compiler Mibu no Tadamine and a mid-Heian poet. He is known for his poem on love that competed with Taira no Kanemori at the palace poetry contest of the fourth year of Tentoku, and he is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

First line, "onoe naru," means "on the summit," referring to the summit at Takasago, with "naru" the attributive form of "nari" expressing existence.
Second line, "matsu no kozue wa," means "the treetops of the pines." The pine of Takasago also appears in 463 of this book.
Third line, "uchinabiki," means "bending low," conveying the strength of the wind.
Fourth line, "nami no koe ni zo," means "with the voice of the waves," with "zo" an emphatic particle. Following the koto music of the two preceding poems, here the pine wind is likened to the voice of waves.
Final line, "kaze mo fukikeru," means "the wind too blows," resolving "zo" with the attributive "keru."
