Wasuru na yo hodo wa kumoi ni narinu tomo sora yuku tsuki no meguriau made

English Translation
Do not forget me,
though the distance between us
grows as far as clouds,
until, like the moon that crosses
the sky, we meet once again.
Meaning
Do not forget me, though the distance between us grows as far as the clouds, until we meet again as the moon that crosses the sky comes round once more.
Commentary
Book Eight Miscellaneous Poems I 470

Headnote: "When Tachibana no Tadamoto was secretly courting someone's daughter and was about to go to a distant place, sent to her"
The poet asks the beloved not to forget, though the distance between them grows as far as the clouds, until they meet again as the moon crossing the sky comes round. The headnote shows it was sent by Tachibana no Tadamoto, about to leave for a distant province, to a woman he had been secretly visiting. He entrusts the promise of reunion to the moon that circles the sky and returns. The author is recorded in the original as anonymous, but the headnote suggests it is Tadamoto's poem.
This poem also appears in the Tales of Ise as one sent by a man setting out on a far journey to a woman, and it was often cited in later literature. Where the moon "in the far sky" of 437 in this book was a moon close at hand, this poem sings of a moon that comes round again even across great distance.

First line, "wasuru na yo," means "do not forget," with "na" prohibitive and "yo" a particle of address. The poem breaks here.
Second line, "hodo wa kumoi ni," means "the distance, as far as the clouds," with "kumoi" meaning a far-off place.
Third line, "narinu tomo," means "even if it becomes," with "tomo" expressing a concessive supposition.
Fourth line, "sora yuku tsuki no," means "of the moon that crosses the sky," overlaying reunion on the moon's course.
Final line, "meguriau made," means "until we meet again," returning to "wasuru na yo" in the first line and marking, through inversion, the term of the wish.
