Book Eight Miscellaneous Poems I 499
Headnote: "When the Assistant Governor-General Kuniaki, who had borrowed a belt, returned it on coming up from Tsukushi"
The poet says that thinking it might serve as a token of remembrance in years to come, he would leave even a keepsake as slight as dew. The headnote shows it was composed when the Assistant Governor-General of Dazaifu, Fujiwara no Kuniaki, returned a belt he had borrowed on coming up from Tsukushi. With the returned belt, he expresses a wish that it serve as a keepsake for recalling their friendship. Linking the grass-and-dew words "shinobugusa," "tsuyu" and "oku," it begins a run of dew poems continuing through 503 in this book.
The author, written as Motosuke, is Kiyohara no Motosuke. A grandson of Kiyohara no Fukayabu, he was one of the Five Men of the Pear Chamber who compiled the Gosenshū and worked on reading the Man'yōshū. The father of Sei Shōnagon, he is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "yukusue no," means "of the future."
Second line, "shinobugusa ni mo," means "as a remembrance-grass." "Shinobugusa" joins the name of a fern with "shinobu," to recall the past fondly.
Third line, "ari ya tote," means "thinking it might be," with "ya" a questioning particle.
Fourth line, "tsuyu no katami mo," means "even a keepsake slight as dew," with "tsuyu," dew, an associated word for the fern.
Final line, "okan to zo omou," means "I think to leave," with "oka," to leave, an associated word for dew settling. It resolves "zo" with the attributive "omou."
