Book Eight Miscellaneous Poems I 506
Headnote: "Topic unknown"
The poet wishes for a place outside this world, where a form grown old might be hidden. Out of shame at exposing an aged form to others' eyes, it expresses a wish to hide away beyond the world. Taking up the wish to abandon the world in the preceding poem, 505, poems on "yo no naka," this world, continue from here to the close of the book.
First line, "yo no naka ni," means "in this world," sharing words with the first line of the next poem, "yo no naka o."
Second line, "aranu tokoro mo," means "a place that is not," a place outside this world.
Third line, "eteshigana," means "if only I could find," with "teshigana" a final particle expressing one's own wish. The poem breaks here.
Fourth line, "toshi furinitaru," means "that has grown old," with "furi" meaning to grow old with the years.
Final line, "katachi kakusamu," means "I would hide my form," with "mu" an auxiliary of intention. Through inversion it gives afterward the purpose of the wish.
