Book Nine Miscellaneous Poems II 528
Headnote: "Sent in the year when the monk Kenshu went out to serve as a field ascetic at the Butsumyō ceremony"
The poet teases that Kenshu, said to have many dwellings that are not in the mountains, has so soon become a field ascetic. The headnote shows it was sent by Tsunefusa in the year Kenshu went out in the role of a field ascetic at the Butsumyō ceremony. He is amused that a monk who ought to be a mountain ascetic, but who was rumored to keep several homes in town, has taken the role of one who sleeps in the fields. Together with the reply in the next poem, 529, it forms an exchange.
The author, Lord Minamoto no Tsunefusa, is Minamoto no Tsunefusa. A son of the Minister of the Left Minamoto no Takaakira, he rose to Provisional Middle Counselor.
First line, "yama naranu," means "not in the mountains," speaking of homes in town as opposed to the mountains where ascetics practice. It answers the second line of the preceding poem, 527, "yama no kodera ni," through words of mountain dwelling.
Second line, "sumika amata ni," means "dwellings here and there."
Third line, "kiku hito no," means "you, of whom I had heard," pointing to the monk Kenshu.
Fourth line, "nobushi ni toku mo," means "so soon a field ascetic," with "toku" meaning "early" or "soon." The word "nobushi" is carried into the first and second lines of the next poem, 529, "yamabushi mo nobushi mo."
Final line, "narinikeru kana," means "you have become," with "ni" perfective, "keru" past, and "kana" exclamatory.
