- English Translation

The mountains so high,
the evening sun has hidden
from the moor of reeds;
I should have set a rope there
so that I could see it after.
- Meaning
- Because the mountains are high, the evening sun has hidden itself from the field of low reeds; I should have tied a marker there, so that I might see it again later.
- Commentary

Book Nine Miscellaneous Poems II 546
Headnote: "Topic unknown"
The poet says that he should have tied a marker on the field of low reeds, now lost to view as the evening sun sinks behind the high mountains, so that he could see it again later. Regretting that the field lit by the evening sun has passed into the mountain's shadow, he wishes he had marked it as his own. Tying a marker as a sign of possession also hints at claiming a beloved as one's own, and the poem conveys lingering attachment to something no longer seen.
The author, written as "Hitomaro," is Kakinomoto no Hitomaro. A court poet who served in the reigns of Empress Jitō and Emperor Monmu, he is revered as the Saint of Poetry.
A poem in nearly the same form appears in Book Seven of the Man'yōshū.
First line, "yama takami," means "because the mountains are high," with "mi" a suffix expressing cause or reason.
Second line, "yūhi kakurenu," means "the evening sun has hidden," with "nu" a perfective auxiliary. It shares the word "yūhi" with the fourth line of the next poem, 547, "asahi yūhi no."
Third line, "asajihara," means "a field of low reeds," and the poem breaks after this third line, ending on a noun.
Fourth line, "nochi mimu tame ni," means "so that I could see it later," with "mu" an auxiliary of intention.
Final line, "shime yuwamashi o," means "I should have tied a marker," with "mashi" a counterfactual auxiliary and "o" an exclamatory final particle.
