Book Ten Kagura Songs 589
Headnote: "On making a pilgrimage to Sumiyoshi"
The poem marvels at how long the pine of Sumiyoshi has stood, when the poet thinks how it has grown up together with the god who came down from heaven. The headnote shows it was composed on a pilgrimage to the Sumiyoshi Shrine. Seeing the god and the pine as having grown up together, it overlays the pine's long years with the antiquity of the god and praises the god of Sumiyoshi. Under the same headnote as the next poem, 590, two poems on the pine of Sumiyoshi stand side by side.
The author, Priest Anpō, was of the Saga Genji line, a great-grandson of the Kawara Minister of the Left, Minamoto no Tōru, and his lay name was Minamoto no Shitagau. He lived at the Kawara-in and associated with poets such as Priest Egyō. He is one of the Thirty-Six Later Immortal Poets.
First line, "amakudaru," means "descended from heaven," speaking of the god's descent to earth.
Second line, "arahitogami no," means "of the god who appears in human form," pointing to the god of Sumiyoshi.
Third line, "aioi o," means "growing up together," speaking of the god and the pine being born and raised together.
Fourth line, "omoeba hisashi," means "when I think of it, how long," and the poem breaks after this fourth line, with the final line giving the subject in inverted order.
Final line, "Sumiyoshi no matsu," the pine on the shore of Sumiyoshi, ends on a noun. It takes up "matsu" in the final line of 587 and shares the same line with the final line of the next poem, 590, "Sumiyoshi no matsu."
