Book Ten Kagura Songs 592
Headnote: "When Lord Minamoto no Tōfuru had a child born"
The poem celebrates the future of a newborn child, bidding the twilled cedars of Hirano's plain grow thick enough to be cut into robe upon robe of deep purple. The headnote shows it was sent when a child was born to Minamoto no Tōfuru. Laying the child's growth over the thriving cedars of the Hirano Shrine, it wishes that he may rise in rank, layering on robes of deep purple, the color of high rank. Following the pines through 591, it sings of the cedar as a tree of a god's shrine.
The author, written as "Motosuke," is Kiyohara no Motosuke. The father of Sei Shōnagon, he took part in compiling the Gosenshū as one of the Five Men of the Pear Chamber. He is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
Hirano is the site of the Hirano Shrine in Yamashiro Province, which is also counted among the tutelary shrines of the Minamoto clan.
First line, "oishigere," means "grow thick," and the poem breaks after this first line, ending on the imperative.
Second line, "Hirano no hara no," means "of Hirano's plain," the land where the Hirano Shrine stands.
Third line, "ayasugi yo," means "you cedars whose needles cross like twill," a direct address. The poem breaks here.
Fourth line, "koki murasaki ni," means "in deep purple," the color of robes worn by those of high rank.
Final line, "tachikasanu beku," is a pivot word: "tachi" means the cedars "standing" and robes being "cut" and layered. "Beku," the continuative form of the auxiliary "beshi," leaves the line trailing off.
