Book Ten Kagura Songs 595
Headnote: "For a sliding screen in the house of the Awata Minister of the Right, at a place depicting nets being drawn at Karasaki where a purification is held"
The poem says that the net cast at Karasaki on this day of purification was a sign that the gods accept the prayers. The headnote shows it was written for a screen painting in the house of the Awata Minister of the Right, Fujiwara no Michikane, depicting nets being drawn at Karasaki during a purification. Pivoting on hauling in the net's floats and the gods "accepting," it sees the net-hauling at the purification as a sign of the gods' consent. Following the preceding poem, 594, it sings of purification.
The author, Taira no Suketaka, was an official and poet of the mid-Heian period. The Awata Minister of the Right is Fujiwara no Michikane, a son of Fujiwara no Kaneie, who became Minister of the Right and then Regent. Karasaki, on the shore of Lake Biwa in Ōmi Province, was a famous place for purification.
First line, "misogi suru," means "performing purification," sharing the word "misogi" with the second line of the preceding poem, 594, "misogi ikuyo ni."
Second line, "kyō Karasaki ni," means "today at Karasaki."
Third line, "orosu ami wa," means "the net that is cast," a hypermetric line of six syllables.
Fourth line, "kami no ukehiku," is a pivot word: "ukehiku" means hauling in the net's floats and the gods "accepting" the prayer.
Final line, "shirushi narikeri," means "was the sign," with "keri" expressing a sigh of realization.
