Book Ten Kagura Songs 602
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Fūzoku songs for the Great Thanksgiving Festival of the first year of Anna: Mount Mikami"
The poem says that the sakaki leaves whose color will not change through ten thousand ages are those growing on Mount Mikami. Laying the unchanging color of the evergreen sakaki over a reign that endures forever, it rejoices that such sakaki grows on Mount Mikami in the province chosen for the festival. Like the preceding poem, 601, it sings of the sakaki of Mount Mikami and is the second of the three poems on that mountain.
The headnote, "Fūzoku songs for the Great Thanksgiving Festival of the first year of Anna," shows that the poem was offered at the Great Thanksgiving Festival held in the first year of Anna upon the accession of Emperor Reizei. At this festival, poems working in the place names of the provinces chosen as Yuki and Suki were offered, and from here to 608 poems follow whose topics are the names of mountains and shores in those provinces.
First line, "yorozuyo no," means "through ten thousand ages," a boundless span of years.
Second line, "iro mo kawaranu," means "whose color does not change," speaking of the evergreen sakaki. It shares the same phrasing with the fourth line of 604, "iro mo kawarazu."
Third line, "sakakiba wa," means "the sakaki leaves," the same line as the third line of the preceding poem, 601, "sakakiba wa."
Fourth line, "Mikami no yama ni," means "on Mount Mikami," the place name given as the topic.
Final line, "ouru narikeri," means "are those that grow, I see," with "nari" assertive and "keri" expressing a sigh of realization.
