Book Eleven Love Poems I 664
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem says that ever since the poet saw through the beloved, like a jeweled blind, as fickle and given to love, not a day has passed without speaking the word "cruel." Like the preceding poem, 663, it pivots "sukeru" on "showing through" and "loving," but where that poem called the poet's own love "sukeru kokoro," this one sees the beloved's inconstancy as "sukeru kokoro," a reversal built on the same word. "Kakenu" is used through its link with hanging a blind.
First line, "tamadare no," means "of the jeweled blind," modifying "sukeru" in the second line. It refers to the same thing as the first line of the preceding poem, 663, "tamasudare."
Second line, "sukeru kokoro to," is a pivot word: "sukeru" means the blind "showing through" and "fickle in love." It is the same word as the fourth line of the preceding poem, "sukeru kokoro wa," here describing the beloved's inconstancy.
Third line, "miteshi yori," means "ever since I saw," with "te" the continuative form of the perfective "tsu" and "shi" the attributive form of the past "ki."
Fourth line, "tsurashi chō koto," means "the word 'cruel,'" with "chō" a contraction of "to iu."
Final line, "kakenu hi wa nashi," means "no day that I do not speak it," with "kake" associated with hanging a blind. It shares the verb "kaku" with the final line of the preceding poem, "omoikaketeki," and ends in the same form as the final line of 697, "koinu hi wa nashi."
