Book Eleven Love Poems I 687
Headnote: "Called in to the house of a woman he was courting as he passed in front of it"
The poem asks how many times the poet must pass by the beloved's house, leaving behind there the heart that loves her in secret. The headnote shows it was called in to the house of a woman he was courting as he passed in front of it. It expresses the frustration of a heart that stays at her house while the body can only pass by without stopping.
First line, "hito shirezu," means "unknown to others," the same line as the first line of 676.
Second line, "omou kokoro o," means "the heart that loves," the same line as the fourth line of 623.
Third line, "todometsutsu," means "leaving it behind," speaking of leaving one's heart at her house.
Fourth line, "ikutabi kimi ga," means "how many times, your."
Final line, "yado o suguran," means "must I pass your house," with "ran" an auxiliary of present conjecture, ending in the attributive form in answer to the interrogative "ikutabi" in the fourth line.
