Longing all the while,
I have lived out this day;
but when the haze rises,
tomorrow's long day of spring,
how shall I live it through?

Longing all the while, I have lived through today; but how shall I pass tomorrow's long spring day when the haze rises?
Commentary
Book Eleven Love Poems I 695

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem says that, longing all the while, the poet has lived through today, but wonders how to pass tomorrow's long spring day when the haze rises. It expresses love's suffering, so great that one cannot bear a long spring day, through the contrast of today and tomorrow. Taking up the yesterday and today of the preceding poem, 694, it moves time forward to today and tomorrow. It shares its first and final lines with the next poem, 696, the two forming a pair. A poem of nearly the same form appears in Book Ten of the Man'yōshū.
The author, written as "Hitomaro," is Kakinomoto no Hitomaro. A court poet who served in the reigns of Empress Jitō and Emperor Monmu, he is revered as the Saint of Poetry.

First line, "koitsutsu mo," means "longing all the while," the same line as the first line of the next poem, 696.
Second line, "kyō wa kurashitsu," means "I have lived through today," with "tsu" perfective. The poem breaks after this second line. It takes up the fourth line of the preceding poem, 694, "kyō ya waga mi no."
Third line, "kasumi tatsu," means "when the haze rises," modifying "haruhi," spring day, in the fourth line.
Fourth line, "asu no haruhi o," means "tomorrow's long spring day."
Final line, "ikade kurasan," means "how shall I live it through," with "n" the attributive form of the conjectural auxiliary. It is the same line as the final line of the next poem, 696, "ikade kurasamu."
