Aimite mo nao nagusamanu kokoro kana iku chiyo nete ka koi no samu beki

English Translation
Even having met,
still my heart is not consoled,
how it longs on so!
How many thousand nights' sleep
before I wake from this love?
Meaning
Even after we have met, my heart is still not consoled; how many thousand nights must we sleep together before I wake from this love?
Commentary
Book Twelve Love Poems II 716

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Sent the morning after first visiting a woman"
The poem exclaims at a heart still unconsoled after meeting and asks how many thousand nights of sleeping together it would take to wake from this love. The headnote is the same as that of the two preceding poems, a morning-after poem sent after the first visit to a woman. Thinking of waking from love as one wakes from sleep, it expresses the depth of a love whose longing would not run out however many nights were shared. It closes the sequence, begun at 710, on longing that grows all the stronger after a meeting.
The author, written as "Tsurayuki," is Ki no Tsurayuki. He was the leading compiler of the Kokinshū, wrote its kana preface and the Tosa Diary, and is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

First line, "aimite mo," means "even having met," the same line as the first line of 712, "aimite mo."
Second line, "nao nagusamanu," means "still not consoled," using the same words as the second and third lines of 713, "nao aimite mo nagusamazu."
Third line, "kokoro kana," means "what a heart," with "kana" exclamatory. The poem breaks after this third line.
Fourth line, "iku chiyo nete ka," means "after sleeping together how many thousand nights," with the binding particle "ka" resolved by the attributive "beki" in the final line.
Final line, "koi no samu beki," means "will I wake from love," answering "nete," sleeping, in the fourth line with "samu," to wake.
