Book Twelve Love Poems II 747
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem says that for a while the poet will make the beloved wonder whether he will ever come, out of vexation at the evening he went home without seeing her. It frankly expresses the sulking heart of a man who, having gone to visit and been refused, means to repay her by holding back his visits and making her wait.
First line, "konu ka na to," means "will he not come."
Second line, "shibashi wa hito ni," means "for a while, her."
Third line, "omowasemu," means "I will make her think," with "se" causative and "mu" an auxiliary of intention. The poem breaks after this third line.
Fourth line, "awade kaerishi," means "when I went home without meeting," with "de" a negative conjunctive particle.
Final line, "yoi no netasa ni," means "for the vexation of that evening," giving in inverted order the reason for the third line.
