Book Twelve Love Poems II 753
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem wishes that the poet could, for a while, change places with the beloved to make her know how painful it is to love. It expresses a heart mixed with resentment and longing, wanting a cold beloved to taste the same pain of love that one suffers.
First line, "koi suru wa," means "to love."
Second line, "kurushiki mono to," means "is a painful thing."
Third line, "shirasu beku," means "so as to make her know," with "beku" the continuative form of "beshi," expressing purpose.
Fourth line, "hito o waga mi ni," means "her, into myself."
Final line, "shibashi nasaba ya," means "I wish I could make for a while," with "ba ya" a final particle of one's own wish.
