Book Thirteen Love Poems III 820
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem says that, with the same heart as the cuckoo of Mount Matsuchi, whose name means waiting for one who does not come, one too cannot help crying aloud. Pivoting the mountain's name on "matsu," to wait, it lays one's own heart, weeping while waiting for one who does not come, over the cuckoo's ceaseless cry.
First line, "konu hito o," means "for one who does not come."
Second line, "Matsuchi no yama no," is a pivot word: "matsu" means "waiting" for one who does not come and Mount Matsuchi on the border of Kii and Yamato. Following 818 and 819, it is a poem pivoting meaning on a place name.
Third line, "hototogisu," is the cuckoo that heralds summer, whose cry was thought to stir thoughts of love. The third line of the next poem, 821, is also "hototogisu," so two poems stand together.
Fourth line, "onaji kokoro ni," means "with the same heart as the cuckoo."
Final line, "ne koso nakarure," means "I cannot help crying aloud," with "rure" the perfective form of the spontaneous auxiliary "ru," concluding in answer to "koso."
