Book Thirteen Love Poems III 831
Headnote: "For a painting on a sliding door at the house of Lord Ren'gi: a lonely-looking house with pinks growing"
The poem wishes to show one who understands feeling the dew lying all night on the pinks of one's house, that is, the tears shed while lying awake in bed. The headnote shows it was composed for a painting on a sliding door at the house of Lord Ren'gi, of a lonely house where pinks grow. Speaking in the voice of a woman living in the pictured house, it entrusts the loneliness of sleeping alone to the dew.
The author, "Kiyohara no Motosuke," was the father of Sei Shōnagon and one of the Five Men of the Pear Chamber who compiled the Gosenshū. He is one of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "omoishiru," means "who understands feeling."
Second line, "hito ni miseba ya," means "how I wish to show someone," with "ba ya" expressing one's own wish and a caesura here.
Third line, "yomosugara," means "all night long."
Fourth line, "waga tokonatsu ni," is a pivot word: "tokonatsu" is another name for the pink, "everlasting summer," and contains "toko," a bed. It shares the same flower with "nadeshiko" in the preceding poem, 830.
Final line, "okiitaru tsuyu," is a pivot word: "oki" means dew "settling" and "rising" without sleeping, laying tears over the dew. It ends on a noun. It shares dew with "tsuyukeku" in the next poem, 832.
