English Translation
The autumn wind that
blows on evenings when my dear
husband does not come,
more than the one who comes not,
how hateful it is to me.
Meaning
The autumn wind that blows on evenings when my husband does not come is even more hateful to me than the one who does not come.
Commentary
Book Thirteen Love Poems III 833

Headnote: "From among the three hundred and sixty poems"
The poem says that the autumn wind blowing on an evening when one's husband does not come is even more hateful than the one who does not come. Since the piercing autumn wind stirs the loneliness of waiting alone, it says, with an unexpected twist, that the autumn wind is more hateful than the absent lover. The headnote's "three hundred and sixty poems" is thought to refer to Yoshitada's set of 360 poems composed to match the days of the year.
The author, "Sone no Yoshitada," was a poet called Sotan from his post as a junior official of Tango. He was known for his novel style and is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets of the middle period. He is known for the Hyakunin Isshu poem "yura no to o wataru funabito kaji o tae."

First line, "waga seko ga," means "my husband." It shares "seko" with the first lines of 818 and 819, "waga seko o."
Second line, "kimasanu yoi no," means "of the evening when he does not come," with "masa" the irrealis form of the honorific auxiliary "masu." It shares "kimasu" with "kimi shi kimasaba" in 795.
Third line, "akikaze wa," means "the autumn wind."
Fourth line, "konu hito yori mo," means "more than the one who does not come," restating the second line's "kimasanu" to compare the absent one with the autumn wind.
Final line, "urameshiki kana," means "how hateful," with "kana" exclamatory.
