Book Thirteen Love Poems III 836
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem says that the beloved has not met one until the rice sown in a field dug out of the Sumiyoshi shore has ripened and is ready to reap. Over the long months from opening the field and sowing the seed to the harvest, it lays the length of time passed without meeting.
The author, "Hitomaro," is Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, a court poet of the Asuka period revered as the sage of poetry and the foremost poet of the Man'yōshū, and one of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets. Many Man'yōshū poems are included in the Shūishū under Hitomaro's name.
A similar poem is included in Book Ten of the Man'yōshū.
First line, "Sumiyoshi no," means "of Sumiyoshi," a poetic place in Settsu.
Second line, "kishi o ta ni hori," means "digging the shore into a field."
Third line, "makishi ine no," means "of the rice that was sown," a line with an extra syllable. Taking up the ears of rice in the autumn field of the preceding poem, 835, it sings of rice.
Fourth line, "karu hodo made mo," means "until the time of reaping." Where 811 and 812 sing of tilling the spring field, this poem sings of reaping rice in autumn, laying the length of months without meeting over the turning of the seasons.
Final line, "awanu kimi kana," means "you who do not meet me," with "kana" exclamatory. It is a final line of the same form as that of 816, "akanu kimi kana."
