Shime yuwanu nobe no akihagi kaze fukeba tofushi kakufushi mono o koso omoe

English Translation
Like autumn clover
in the fields with no rope tied,
when the wind blows, bending
this way, bending that way, so
am I torn by many thoughts.
Meaning
Like the autumn bush clover in the fields where no rope is tied, bending this way and that when the wind blows, so am I torn by many thoughts.
Commentary
Book Thirteen Love Poems III 839

Headnote: "Topic unknown"
The poem says that as the autumn bush clover of the open fields, marked by no boundary rope, bends now this way and now that when the wind blows, so one is torn by many thoughts. The scene of clover swaying in the wind in the upper verse forms a preface, laying over it the unease of a love that belongs to no one and a heart in disarray.

First line, "shime yuwanu," means "with no boundary rope tied," meaning it belongs to no one.
Second line, "nobe no akihagi," means "the autumn bush clover of the fields." Following 837 and 838, it is the third poem on autumn bush clover.
Third line, "kaze fukeba," means "when the wind blows." The first three lines form a preface.
Fourth line, "tofushi kakufushi," means "bending this way and that," laying the clover swaying in the wind over a heart torn by many thoughts.
Final line, "mono o koso omoe," means "how I brood," concluding in the perfective form "omoe" in answer to "koso."
