Book Fourteen Love Poems IV 891
Headnote: "Having had a model of Mount Fuji made, he sent it to the lady of the Fujitsubo"
The poem says that what no one in the world can match is my love, burning high like the fire of Fuji's peak soaring above the clouds. The emperor likens his love to Fuji, the highest mountain in the land, and the fire that burns there, displaying its height and intensity with dignity.
According to the headnote, it was written when he had a model of Mount Fuji made and sent it to a consort living in the Fujitsubo. He entrusts his love to the gift of the mountain.
The author, "Tenryaku Gyosei," is Emperor Murakami, a son of Emperor Daigo whose reign was praised as the Tenryaku era of good rule. He ordered the compilation of the Gosenshū and held the Tentoku Palace Poetry Contest of the fourth year of Tentoku.
First line, "yo no hito no," means "of the people of the world."
Second line, "oyobanu mono wa," means "what they cannot match."
Third line, "Fuji no ne no," means "of the peak of Fuji," which was then sung as a mountain sending up smoke. With "miyako no Fuji" in the next poem, 892, two poems on Fuji stand side by side.
Fourth line, "kumoi ni takaki," means "high above the clouds," with "kumoi" also suggesting the palace, expressing the loftiness of the emperor's love. It shares a word for the high and distant with "kumoi" in 909 and 910 of this book.
Final line, "omoi narikeri," means "it is my love," with the "hi" of "omoi" a pivot word joining "hi," the fire burning on Fuji's peak. "Keri" expresses exclamation.
