Book Fourteen Love Poems IV 897
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem expresses a realization: the dozing my parents scolded me for was what one does when lost in thoughts of love. Unable to sleep at night for love's troubles and dozing off by day, the speaker grasps the meaning of the parents' old warning.
The fourth line of the main text reads "mono omou toki no," which does not match "omo omou toki no" in the reading line; here the main text is followed.
First line, "tarachine no," is a pillow word modifying "oya," parent. It shares its first and second lines with 895 in this book, the poems on parents answering each other.
Second line, "oya no isameshi," means "that my parents warned against," with "shi" the attributive of the past "ki."
Third line, "utatane wa," means "dozing off." Taking up "i koso nerarene" of the preceding poem, 896, it sings of dozing after a sleepless night.
Fourth line, "mono omou toki no," means "of the times one is lost in thoughts of love."
Final line, "waza ni zo arikeru," means "so that is what it was," concluding in "keru," the attributive of the past "keri," in answer to the binding particle "zo." "Keri" expresses sudden realization.
