seen beyond the clouds, the house
where my love dwells—

my black horse, carry me there.

My love's house lies far off, seen beyond the clouds; I want to get there soon—go on, my black horse!
Commentary
Book Fourteen Love Poems IV 910

Headnote: "Composed while on the road"
The poem calls to the black horse he rides to press on, for he longs to reach quickly his beloved's house, seen far off beyond the clouds. Voicing his eagerness through his call to the horse, it vividly depicts a journey hurrying toward a lover.
According to the headnote, it was composed while on the road.
The author, "Hitomaro", is Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, a court poet of the Asuka period revered as the sage of poetry and the foremost poet of the Man'yōshū, and one of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets. Many Man'yōshū poems are included in the Shūishū under Hitomaro's name.
A similar poem appears in Book Seven of the Man'yōshū with the first line "tōku arite."

First line, "yoso ni arite," means "being far away." It is a hypermetric line with one extra syllable.
Second line, "kumoi ni miyuru," means "seen beyond the clouds." It shares "kumoi," the far distance, with "kumoi naru" in the preceding poem, 909.
Third line, "imo ga ie ni," means "to my beloved's house." It is a hypermetric line with one extra syllable.
Fourth line, "hayaku itaramu," means "I want to arrive soon," with "mu" an auxiliary of intention. The poem breaks here.
Final line, "ayume kurokoma," means "go on, black horse," ending with an imperative and a call. With "michi no kurokoma" in the next poem, 911, two poems on a black horse stand side by side, this one hurrying toward a lover and the next on the road home, forming a pair. It takes up "koma" in 903 and 904 of this book.
