Omoimasu hito shi nakereba masukagami utsureru kage to ne o nomi zo naku

English Translation
Since there is no one
who loves more deeply than I,
in the polished mirror,
with the image reflected there
I do nothing but weep aloud.
Meaning
Since no one loves me more than I love, I do nothing but weep aloud, with only the image in the clear mirror beside me.
Commentary
Book Fourteen Love Poems IV 916

Headnote: "Topic unknown"
The poem says that because there is no one who loves me more than I love, I do nothing but weep aloud, with only my reflection in the clear mirror for company. It expresses the loneliness of being cared for by no one through the forlorn scene of only one's own image in the mirror weeping along.

First line, "omoimasu," means "who loves more."
Second line, "hito shi nakereba," means "since there is no one," with "shi" emphatic and "ba" a fixed condition.
Third line, "masukagami," is a clear mirror, drawn out by repeating the sound "masu" of the first line. With the third line of the preceding poem, 915, "masukagami," two mirror poems stand side by side.
Fourth line, "utsureru kage to," means "together with my reflected image," with "ru" the attributive of the continuative auxiliary "ri."
Final line, "ne o nomi zo naku," means "I only weep aloud," concluding in the attributive "naku" in answer to the binding particle "zo." It shares the weeping aloud with the fourth and final lines of the next poem, 917, "ne o dani yasuku nakubeki mono o."
