Book Fourteen Love Poems IV 918
Headnote: "Sent by the woman when Prince Motoyoshi was courting Koma no Myōbu"
The poem says: this self of no account feels wretched enough as it is; what more would you have of me, that I am sunk so deep in brooding? It sings of a woman who, courted by a lover of high rank, is troubled by thoughts of her own lowly station.
According to the headnote, it was sent by the woman at the time when Prince Motoyoshi was courting Koma no Myōbu. Prince Motoyoshi, a son of Emperor Yōzei, was known for his many loves and is the author of the Hyakunin Isshu poem "wabinureba."
The author, "Koma no Myōbu," was a lady-in-waiting at court who exchanged love poems with Prince Motoyoshi; little else is known of her.
First line, "kazu naranu," means "of no account, not worth counting." It shares words of self-effacement with "kazu ni mo aranu" in 872 and "kazu naranu mi" in 879 of this book.
Second line, "mi wa tada ni dani," means "this self, even as it is," with "dani" meaning "even."
Third line, "omōete," means "feels wretched."
Fourth line, "ika ni seyo to ka," means "what would you have me do," with "ka" an interrogative binding particle.
Final line, "nagameraruran," means "must I sink into brooding," with "nagamu" meaning to gaze vacantly, lost in thought, and "raru" a spontaneous auxiliary. It concludes in the attributive of the present conjectural "ran" in answer to "ka."
