Book Fifteen Love Poems V 930
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem says: where shall I go and hide, for it is because I exist in this world that the other's coldness is so painful. Finding the root of love's pain in the very fact of one's own existence, it voices a deep lament that longs to vanish from the world.
First line, "izukata ni," means "in which direction, where."
Second line, "yukikakurenan," means "shall I go and hide away," with "na" the irrealis of the perfective "nu" and "n" volitional. The poem breaks here.
Third line, "yo no naka ni," means "in this world." Together with 931 and 933 that follow, it speaks of "yo no naka," and poems that view love's pain in relation to the world stand side by side.
Fourth line, "mi no areba koso," means "precisely because I exist," with the binding particle "koso" giving emphasis.
Final line, "hito mo tsurakere," means "the other too seems cold," closing with "tsurakere," the realis of the adjective "tsurashi," in answer to "koso" in the fourth line.
