Book Fifteen Love Poems V 932
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem says: though I think your words are false, whose sincerity could I possibly rely on now? It sings of the helplessness of a love that, knowing the other's faithlessness yet having no one else to turn to, can only cling to the falsehood.
First line, "itsuwari to," means "that your words are false."
Second line, "omou mono kara," means "though I think so," with "mono kara" an adversative particle. It shares "mono kara" with 943, 944, and 946 in this book, all singing of a heart that doubts the other yet cannot let go.
Third line, "imasara ni," means "now, at this late hour."
Fourth line, "ta ga makoto o ka," means "whose sincerity," with the binding particle "ka" rhetorical, forming a kakari-musubi with the final line.
Final line, "ware wa tanomamu," means "should I rely on? no one," closing with the attributive of the conjectural "mu" in answer to "ka" in the fourth line.
