Koite shine koite shine to ya wagimoko ga waga ie no kado o sugite yukuran

English Translation
"Love on and then die,
love on and then die," is that it?
My dearest one
must be walking right past
the gate before my house.
Meaning
"Pine for me and die, pine for me and die"—is that what she means? My beloved seems to pass right by the gate of my house without stopping.
Commentary
Book Fifteen Love Poems V 936

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem asks: is she telling me to love and die, my dear one who passes by the gate of my house without stopping? It sings of a man's grief at feeling thrust away, told to die of love, as his beloved walks past without calling in.
The author, "Hitomaro", is Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, a court poet of the Asuka period revered as the sage of poetry and the foremost poet of the Man'yōshū, and one of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets. Many Man'yōshū poems are included in the Shūishū under Hitomaro's name.
A similar poem appears in Book Eleven of the Man'yōshū, with the first two lines "koishinaba koi mo shine to ya."

First line, "koite shine," means "love and die." Taking up "shini" from the preceding poem, 935, it is the second of the poems on dying of love.
Second line, "koite shine to ya," repeats the first line to mean "is she telling me to love and die?" The repetition sharpens the feeling of being thrust away. The binding particle "ya" forms a kakari-musubi with the final line.
Third line, "wagimoko ga," means "my dear one."
Fourth line, "waga ie no kado o," means "past the gate of my house," an irregular line of eight syllables.
Final line, "sugite yukuran," means "she must be passing by," closing with the attributive of the present conjectural "ran" in answer to "ya" in the second line.
