Kore o dani kaki zo wazurau ame to furu namida o nogou itoma nakereba

English Translation
Even this little
I struggle so to write,
for the tears that fall
like the rain I have no time
so much as to wipe away.
Meaning
I can barely manage to write even this much, for I have no time to wipe away the tears that fall like rain.
Commentary
Book Fifteen Love Poems V 959

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem says: I struggle even to write this much, for I have no moment to wipe away the tears that fall like rain. It sings of one who takes up the brush to convey love to the beloved but cannot go on writing for the endless flow of tears.

First line, "kore o dani," means "even this much," with "kore" pointing to the letter being written and "dani" expressing a minimum.
Second line, "kaki zo wazurau," means "I struggle to write," concluding with the attributive of the verb "wazurau" in answer to the binding particle "zo." The poem breaks here.
Third line, "ame to furu," means "falling like rain." Taking up the rain poems that run from 956 in this book, it likens rain to tears.
Fourth line, "namida o nogou," means "to wipe away the tears."
Final line, "itoma nakereba," means "since I have no moment," giving by inversion the reason for the second line afterward.
