Kurokami ni shirokami majiri ouru made kakaru koi ni wa imada awazaru ni

English Translation
Until white hairs grew
mingled through the black, I've lived,
and all these long years
never have I come upon
such a love as this one.
Meaning
I have lived until white hairs mingle with the black, and yet never before have I met with such a love as this.
Commentary
Book Fifteen Love Poems V 966

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem says: I have lived until white hairs mingle with the black, yet never have I met with such a love as this. It sings of the surprise and bewilderment of encountering, late in life, a love beyond compare even in the light of long years of experience.
From this poem through 969, four poems attributed to Sakanoue no Iratsume stand together.
The author, "Sakanoue no Iratsume", is Lady Ōtomo no Sakanoue, daughter of Ōtomo no Yasumaro and half-sister of Ōtomo no Tabito. A leading woman poet of the Man'yōshū, she was the aunt of Ōtomo no Yakamochi and also became his mother-in-law when her daughter, Sakanoue no Ōiratsume, married him.
A similar poem appears in Book Four of the Man'yōshū as hers, with the third line "oyuru made" and the final line "imada awanaku ni."

First line, "kurokami ni," means "in black hair."
Second line, "shirokami majiri," means "white hairs mingling," contrasting in color with "kurokami" in the first line.
Third line, "ouru made," means "until they grow," expressing the passing of long years. It shares the long stream of time with "inishie mo ima yukusue mo" in the preceding poem, 965.
Fourth line, "kakaru koi ni wa," means "such a love as this."
Final line, "imada awazaru ni," means "though I have never yet met with," with "ni" an adversative tinged with exclamation, closing with lingering feeling.
