English Translation
Longing for the scent
of you, which I could not enjoy
enough to be content,
it was the blossoms of the plum
that I broke off this morning.
Meaning
Longing for your fragrance, of which I could never have enough, I broke off a branch of plum blossoms this morning.
Commentary
Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Spring Poems 1005

Headnote: "Sent the next morning to Lord Kintō, Intendant of the Right Gate Guards, after people had come to call in the first month"
The poet says that, longing for the fragrance of a friend he could never have enough of, he broke off a branch of plum blossoms this morning. The headnote shows that Prince Tomohira sent it to Fujiwara no Kintō on the morning after people had come to call in the first month. Calling the charm of Kintō, with whom he had spent the previous day, "nioi," he lays it over the scent of plum blossoms to convey the lingering feeling of their parting. From here to 1014, poems on the plum continue.
The author, Prince Tomohira, was a son of Emperor Murakami who served as Minister of Central Affairs and was called the Later Prince of the Central Affairs Ministry. Excelling in learning and poetry, he was a close friend of Fujiwara no Kintō. Kintō, a son of the Chancellor Fujiwara no Yoritada, compiled the Wakan Rōeishū.

First line, "akazarishi," means "that I could never have enough of," with "zari" negative and "shi" the attributive form of the past auxiliary "ki."
Second line, "kimi ga nioi no," means "of your beauty, your fragrance," with "nioi" laying a person's charm over the plum's scent.
Third line, "koishisa ni," means "out of longing."
Fourth line, "ume no hana o zo," means "the plum blossoms," with the binding particle "zo" resolved by the attributive form "tsuru" in the final line.
Final line, "kesa wa oritsuru," means "this morning I broke them off," with "tsuru" the attributive form of the perfective auxiliary "tsu."
