Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Spring Poems 1038
Headnote: "A poem for the monthly screens in the Engi era"
The poet says that if the cherry blossoms were to be found only at his house, he would feel that nothing at all was lacking. The headnote shows it was written for screens depicting the events and scenes of each month in the reign of Emperor Daigo. Expressing in the counterfactual a deep attachment to the cherry, it says that if he could have the blossoms that bloom everywhere all to himself, that alone would satisfy him. It takes up the preceding poem, 1037, which said that blossoms bloom everywhere.
The author, written as "Mitsune," is Ōshikōchi no Mitsune. One of the compilers of the Kokinshū, he is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "sakurabana," means "the cherry blossoms."
Second line, "waga yado ni nomi," means "only at my house," echoing the third lines of 1008 and 1012 in this book, "waga yado no," in singing of the blossoms at one's own house.
Third line, "ari to miba," means "if I saw them to be," with "ba" after the irrealis form expressing supposition.
Fourth line, "naki monokusa wa," means "the things I lack," with "monokusa" understood as the kinds or seeds of things.
Final line, "omowazaramashi," means "I would not think of," with "mashi" a counterfactual auxiliary. Answering the supposition of the third line, it implies the reality that the cherry cannot be had alone.
