Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Spring Poems 1041
Headnote: "Sent to a certain person"
The poet wonders whether he must spend the spring only thinking from afar of the cherry blossoms beyond the haze-wrapped mountains. The headnote shows it was sent to a certain person. Laying the unseen cherry blossoms beyond the mountains over a person far away, he conveys a heart that can only think of the other without meeting. It shares the entire lower verse with the preceding poem, 1040, and where that poem told of the loneliness of missing the flower viewing, this one tells of thinking of distant blossoms cut off by haze.
The author, Jōzō, was a son of the Doctor of Letters Miyoshi no Kiyoyuki and a monk of the Tendai school, known for his spiritual powers. "Midōshi" in the original refers to the monk who leads the assembled clergy in recitation at a Buddhist service.
First line, "kasumi tatsu," means "where the haze rises," modifying "yama" in the second line.
Second line, "yama no anata no," means "beyond the mountains," speaking of distant blossoms hidden by haze.
Third line, "sakurabana," means "the cherry blossoms," the same word as the third line of the preceding poem, 1040.
Fourth line, "omoiyarite ya," means "only imagining them from afar," with the binding particle "ya" expressing a question resolved by "mu" in the final line. It is the same line as the fourth line of the preceding poem.
Final line, "haru o kurasamu," means "shall I pass the spring," the same line as the final line of the preceding poem, "haru o kurasan."
