Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Spring Poems 1055
Headnote: "In the Engi era, on seeing blossoms fallen and piled up at the Southern Hall"
The poet calls on the palace attendants to leave their morning sweeping undone, this spring at least, if they have any feeling. The headnote shows it was composed in the reign of Emperor Daigo, on seeing cherry blossoms fallen and piled up before the Shishinden, the Southern Hall. Grieving to lose the beauty of the fallen petals, he expresses his tenderness for them by calling on the attendants who would sweep them away.
The author, Minamoto no Kintada, was a son of Minamoto no Kuniki, grandson of Emperor Kōkō. He served Emperor Daigo as a chamberlain and rose to Controller of the Right. He is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
The fourth line of the main text reads "kono maki bakari," but in light of "kono haru bakari" in the reading line, "maki" appears to be a miscopying of "haru," spring. Here it is treated as "haru."
First line, "tonomori no," means "of the palace housekeepers," who cleaned the palace and the like.
Second line, "tomo no miyatsuko," means "you lowly officials of the court," and together with the first line it calls out to the attendants.
Third line, "kokoro araba," means "if you have any feeling," with "ba" after the irrealis form expressing supposition.
Fourth line, "kono haru bakari," means "this spring at least."
Final line, "asagiyome su na," means "do not do your morning sweeping," with "na" a final particle of prohibition.
