Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Spring Poems 1070
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "For a screen that the Minister of the Left had made for his daughter, the empress"
The poet says that the purple of the wisteria is so deep that even the green of the pine it clings to has taken on its color. The headnote is the same as that of the preceding poem, 1069, and this too was written for the screen that the Minister of the Left, Fujiwara no Michinaga, had made for his daughter, the empress Shōshi. Exaggerating the depth of the wisteria's color on the pine until it changes even the evergreen's green, it celebrates the flourishing power of the Fujiwara. It closes the sequence on wisteria.
First line, "murasaki no," means "the purple," the same word as the third line of 1068 and the first line of 1069, the two preceding poems.
Second line, "iro shi kokereba," means "since its color is so deep," with "shi" emphatic and "ba" after the perfective form expressing cause.
Third line, "fuji no hana," means "of the wisteria blossoms."
Fourth line, "matsu no midori mo," means "even the green of the pine," pairing pine and wisteria as the first line of 1067 in this book, "matsukaze no," also does.
Final line, "utsuroinikeri," means "has changed its color," with "ni" perfective and "keri" exclamatory. It is the same line as the final line of 1054 in this book, "utsuroinikeri," but where that poem laments faded blossoms, this one sings of being dyed in the wisteria's flourishing color, and the two stand in contrast.
