If only a while
it is not hidden in the shade,
it will surely droop,
the pink, the child once caressed,
so tenderly with love.

Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Spring Poems 1080
Headnote: "Composed while she was still called a consort, at a time when the wife of the Ichijō Regent was away"
The poet says that the pink must droop if it is out of the shade for even a little while. The headnote shows it was composed while the poet was still called a consort, when her mother, the wife of the Ichijō Regent Fujiwara no Koretada, was away. Laying over the pink wilting in the sun herself, uneasy away from her mother's protection, and pivoting on "nadeshiko," the "pink" and "the child once caressed," she conveys her longing for her mother.
The author, written as "the posthumous Empress," appears to be Fujiwara no Kaishi. A daughter of the Ichijō Regent Fujiwara no Koretada, she became a consort of Emperor Reizei and bore Emperor Kazan. After her death she was granted the rank of empress.
First line, "shibashi dani," means "even for a little while," with "dani" marking a minimum.
Second line, "kage ni kakurenu," means "not hidden in the shade," with "kage" laying shade over a mother's protection. "Nu" is the attributive form of the negative "zu."
Third line, "toki wa nao," means "at such times, still."
Fourth line, "unadarenu beki," means "would surely droop," with "nu" perfective and "beki" the attributive form of the conjectural "beshi."
Final line, "nadeshiko no hana," is a pivot word: "nadeshiko" means the "pink" flower and "nadeshi ko," "the child once caressed." Ending on a noun, it sings of the same flower as the "tokonatsu" of the preceding poem, 1079.
