Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Autumn Poems 1094
Headnote: "In reply to a poem sent by Mitsune on the morning after Tanabata"
Comparing himself with the Tanabata stars, who meet across a year's separation, the poet says that he, who has never grown used to a single day without seeing his friend, longs for him more. The headnote shows it is a reply to a poem Mitsune sent him on the morning after Tanabata. Against the once-a-year meeting of Tanabata, he says that even a single day apart is hard to bear, expressing his affection for Mitsune.
1084 in this book is likewise a poem Tsurayuki sent to Mitsune on the morning after Tanabata, so an exchange between the two men prompted by Tanabata is preserved in this book.
The author, written as "Tsurayuki," is Ki no Tsurayuki, the leading compiler of the Kokinshū, who wrote its kana preface and the Tosa Diary. He is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "aimizute," means "without seeing you."
Second line, "hitohi mo kimi ni," means "even for a single day, to you," set against the year-long separation of the Tanabata stars.
Third line, "narawaneba," means "since I have not grown used," with "neba," the perfective form of the negative followed by "ba," giving the reason.
Fourth line, "tanabata yori mo," means "more than the Tanabata stars."
Final line, "ware zo masareru," means "I am the one whose longing is greater," with the binding particle "zo" resolved by "ru," the attributive form of the continuative auxiliary "ri."
