Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Autumn Poems 1113
Headnote: "Topic unknown"
The poet says that at his house, where the autumn wind blows cold, the evening cicadas too are crying at the roots of the low cogon grass. Through the sound of the wind and the voice of the cicadas, it portrays the loneliness of a dwelling as autumn grows colder.
In Book Ten of the Man'yōshū there is a similar poem whose final line is "kōrogi naku mo," the crickets cry.
The author, written as "Hitomaro," is Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, the foremost poet of the Man'yōshū, revered in later ages as the saint of poetry. He is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets. The Shūishū includes many poems from the Man'yōshū and the Hitomaro Collection under his name.
First line, "akikaze no," means "the autumn wind," standing beside the first line of the next poem, 1114, "akikaze shi," as poems that open with the autumn wind.
Second line, "samuku fuku naru," means "seems to blow so cold," with "naru" the attributive form of an auxiliary of inference from sound.
Third line, "waga yado no," means "of my house," the same words as the third line of the next poem, 1114, and also shared with 1109 and 1111 in this book.
Fourth line, "asaji ga moto ni," means "at the roots of the low cogon grass."
Final line, "higurashi mo naku," means "the evening cicadas too are crying," echoing the third line of 1110 in this book, "higurashi no," in singing of evening cicadas.
